Application Area
KNAUF Base Coat LUP is a lightweight base coat for mineral and pasty surface plasters in interior and exterior areas.
- As a basement wall exterior plaster
- As a primer on masonry of compressive strength classes 8
- As a primer on concrete
- As a primer for tiles in damp rooms, residential buildings, and kitchens
Execution
Single-layer 15–20 mm with plaster thicknesses of 20–30 mm; work in two or more layers. Roughen the lower layer with a broom. After complete drying of the first layer (1 day per mm of plaster thickness), apply the second layer and make it flush. Embed a surface plaster mesh close to the surface or, after complete drying of the second layer, perform a full-surface reinforcement with SM700Pro, SM300, or Base Coat SM.
Preparation
Normal absorbent substrates can be plastered without pre-treatment. For highly absorbent substrates, perform the application wet-on-wet, applying a 5–10 mm layer first, then applying the second layer wet-on-wet to the required plaster thickness. For non-absorbent substrates, use a mineral adhesion bridge with SM700 Pro, SM300, Base Coat SM, or Lustro.
Application
For pre-treatment, allow the primer applied to the substrate to dry completely. Base coats are usually processed with a mixing pump (e.g., PFT G4/G5) for efficiency and time savings, but can also be applied manually. Afterwards, distribute the plaster surface evenly with a trowel or straightedge and scrape smooth after initial setting.
Drying
The finished base coat surface must be completely dry before further coating. The drying time depends on the plaster thickness and external conditions such as weather and temperature. To prevent too rapid drying, exterior plasters should be protected from direct sunlight. Generally, a minimum drying time of 1 day per mm of plaster thickness applies.
