Application and Function

Joint Covering KERDI is a crack-bridging waterproofing membrane made from soft-set polyethylene, equipped on both sides with a special fleece fabric for effective anchoring in tile adhesive.

For easy cutting, Joint Covering KERDI is provided with a cutting grid on one side. In addition to the residual quantity indication, the minimum overlap width of 5 cm is shown for the processing of the membranes with each other.

Joint Covering KERDI was developed as a bonded waterproofing with coverings and linings made of tiles and slabs, and according to the required approval in Germany, it has an abP general building authority test certificate and is marked with a symbol. Moisture exposure class according to abP 0 B0 as well as A, B, and C.

Joint Covering KERDI also has an ETAG 022 bonded waterproofing European Technical Assessment (ETA) and is marked with a CE mark.

The waterproofing membrane is glued to a flat substrate using an appropriate tile adhesive. Tiles can be directly laid on Joint Covering KERDI in the thin-bed method. Other suitable trowelable covering materials or plaster layers can also be applied.

Joint Covering KERDI DS is a waterproofing membrane and vapor barrier bonded with a tile covering, e.g., for use in swimming pools and wellness areas, as well as industrial sectors with increased humidity.

Vapor barriers may also be useful on moisture-sensitive substrates such as wood, plasterboard, or plaster.

Complementary to Joint Covering KERDI, interior and exterior corners as well as pipe sleeves are available. To seal connection joints or corner connections, the Joint Covering KERDIKEBA band is offered in widths of 85, 125, 15, 185, and 25 cm.

For sealing over movement joints or flexible edge joints, Joint Covering KERDIFLEX is available in widths of 125 cm or 25 cm.

Processing

The substrate must be free of adhesion-inhibiting components, load-bearing, and even. Any leveling measures should be carried out before installing Joint Covering KERDI.

The choice of adhesive for processing Joint Covering KERDI depends on the type of substrate. The adhesive must adhere to the substrate and mechanically lock into the fleece of Joint Covering KERDI. For most substrates, a hydraulically setting thin-bed mortar can be used. Compatibility of materials should be checked if necessary.

Note: For areas requiring building authority approval, only system-tested thin-bed mortars should be used. These can be inquired at the address provided in this data sheet.

The thin-bed mortar is applied to the substrate with a notched trowel, recommended 3 x 3 mm or 4 x 4 mm.

The pre-cut membranes of Joint Covering KERDI are fully embedded in the applied adhesive with the fleece fabric. To embed, it is recommended to use the flat side of the notched trowel or a smoothing trowel pressed firmly over the KERDI membrane. Air inclusions should be avoided. The open time of the adhesive must be observed.

KERDI membranes in overlapping areas should be joined with a minimum overlap of 5 cm using KERDI COLL or butt jointed and fully bonded with KERDIKEBA using the sealing adhesive KERDICOLL.

For interior and exterior corners, pre-fabricated KERDI corners should be used. For corner joints, the KERDI band should be applied accordingly. For pipe penetrations, insert KERDI KM pipe sleeves. Connections to fixed installation parts can also be made functionally correct.

Depending on the construction situation, KERDI, KERDI band, or KERDIFLEX can be used to create a tight connection with the component to be connected, fixing it with KERDIFIX.

In the area of thin-bed floor drains, a cut as an access sleeve of 50 x 50 cm from KERDI should be clamped or sealed into the flange of the floor drain. The adjacent KERDI membrane is to be led up to the floor drain to a distance of about 10 cm and sealed tightly without voids on the connection sleeve.

Note on floor drainage

Special floor drains for connection to bonded waterproofing are available with KERDI DRAIN and KERDI LINE. KERDI can be quickly and securely processed here using the corresponding KERDI sleeves.

Existing movement joints or construction separation joints should be separated from KERDI and overlapped with KERDIFLEX over the joints. For flexible edge closures, KERDIFLEX should also be used. Alternatively, KERDI band can be used if a corresponding loop is formed.

Once the entire bonded waterproofing, including overlaps, corners, and connections, is sealed, the covering can be applied. No waiting time is necessary.

For tile laying, hydraulically setting thin-bed mortar is applied directly on KERDI, and the tiles are embedded largely flush with it. For chemically resistant coverings, suitable reactive resin adhesives and grout mortars should be used.

For areas requiring CE conformity or according to the abP general building authority test certificate, only system-tested thin-bed mortars should be used. The thin-bed mortars and the corresponding test certificates can be inquired at the address provided in this data sheet.
