Application Areas
- For paving
- For grouting
- Suitable for joint widths from 3 mm
- For waterproof jointing of mosaic, small and large paving, as well as slabs made of natural stone, concrete, and clinker
- For non-absorbent natural stone slabs
- Only suitable for execution on permeable substructures
- For ground surfaces in private areas with joint widths of 3 mm and occasional vehicle traffic, such as parking lots, garden paths, garage drives, and terraces
Substrate Preparation
The substructure must be permeable. The entire paving system must be designed according to actual loads and comply with technical standards. Under moderate loads, installation can be carried out in sand, gravel, or crushed stone. When installing in crushed stone, careful compaction is essential. Paving stones and slabs should be embedded approximately 1/3 into the gravel bed; additional stabilization with sand or crushed stone may be necessary. Generally, joint mortar cannot compensate for significant movement of paving stones and slabs. For higher loads, bonded construction methods, e.g., with drain mortar PCI Pavifix DM, should be used. Ceramic slabs should be back-primed with an adhesion bridge, e.g., PCI Flexmörtel S2 Rapid, and set in a drain mortar PCI Pavifix DM. The joint areas must be drainable after installation.
Required joint depth:
- At untrafficable surfaces: at least 30 mm
- At trafficable surfaces: at least 40 mm
- For ceramic slabs set with drain mortar and adhesion bridge: at least 15 mm
For old paving renovations, the joints should be blown out to the required depth, and dirt on the stone edges should be removed.
Pre-treatment of the substrate
Prior to jointing, the surfaces of the paving or slab covering must be thoroughly cleaned until the surface can no longer absorb water. Multiple cleaning may be necessary, especially on rough surfaces and at high outdoor temperatures. During processing, the surface must not dry out; intermittent moistening is recommended depending on ambient conditions.
Application of PCI Pavifix 1K Extra
Apply PCI Pavifix 1K Extra onto the wet surface and work into the joints with a firm rubber trowel under pressure, filling the joint space as completely as possible. Immediately after, actively support the filling process with a water jet. For particularly narrow joints, direct the water jet precisely along the joints. Settled mortar can be immediately refilled with fresh material, ensuring the joint space is completely and tightly filled to the bottom.
After applying the mortar, remove excess mortar from the stone surface thoroughly with a soft broom, e.g., a coconut broom. Sweep diagonally to the joint direction to prevent material from being pulled out.
Joints from 8 mm
Apply PCI Pavifix 1K Extra onto the wet surface and work into the joints with a firm rubber trowel under pressure, ensuring the joint space is fully filled and sealed to the bottom. After filling, clean residual mortar from the stone surface with a soft broom, sweeping diagonally to the joint direction.
Unused fresh material
Remaining mortar cannot be refilled into the container and should be covered with a thumb-width layer of water. This material must be used within a maximum of 4 weeks. Apply water to the surface and work in as described above.
