Description
vdw 480 Bedding Compound is a base compound for the production of drainable bedding mortars.
Ingredients
Cement according to EN 197, trass according to DIN 51043, and special additives.

Material properties
By maintaining the mixing ratio of 1:4 with quartz sand, 2:4, and vdw 480 Bedding Compound, as well as adding 6% water of the total mortar amount at 125 kg (75 liters), the following material properties are achieved:
- Flexural strength approx. 70 N/mm2
- Compressive strength approx. 300 N/mm2
- High water permeability
- Storage stability: 1 year, dry and frost-free in the original sealed container

Processing time: 90 minutes at 20°C, object and outdoor temperature
Outdoor temperature: min. 5°C to max. 25°C
Substrate temperature: min. 5°C to max. 25°C
Prerequisites
The substructure and load-bearing layer must be sufficiently level, load-bearing, and water-draining. They must be designed so that no deformation occurs. Ensure dewatering through drainable subsoil or sufficient dewatering layers, possibly in combination with a drain mat, min. 25% outdoor area, and substrate temperature > 5°C, max. 25°C. Processing should be carried out in dry weather conditions.
Suitable mineral additives
e.g., basalt chippings or quartz sand, grain sizes 2-4 mm, 2-5 mm, 2-8 mm, or 5-8 mm for vdw 480 Bedding Compound.
Mixing Bedding Compound
Pre-mix mineral additives in a forced mixer or free-fall mixer according to the mixing instructions, then add vdw 480 Bedding Compound. Mix thoroughly. Subsequently, add water until an earth-moist mixture is obtained, max. 6% of the total mortar amount. Please note the moisture content of the respective additive.
Installation
Manually apply the mixed bedding mortar in the appropriate layer thickness so that it results in a compacted layer of at least 4 cm to a maximum of 10 cm thickness. For precisely laid paving or slab installations, such as calibrated concrete stones, the bedding mortar can be adjusted to the desired layer thickness using screeding tools. Set the paving stones firmly into the bedding mortar. For improved adhesion, it is recommended to dip the paving stones in vdw 495 Adhesion Slurry before laying. For slab installation, apply vdw 495 Adhesion Slurry to the underside of the slabs. The joint area must be free of vdw 495 Adhesion Slurry.
Load capacity and jointing
The following points refer to a temperature of 20°C and 65% relative humidity. High temperatures shorten, low temperatures lengthen the curing time. With vdw 480 Bedding Compound, slabs can be walked on after at least 24 hours or after the mortar has set, and jointed with vdw paving or slab joint mortar. Full load capacity after 7 days.
Post-treatment
The installed bedding mortar must be protected from rapid drying. Strong heat and drafts should be avoided. The bedding mortar must be sufficiently protected immediately after installation, for at least 24 hours, to prevent drying out.
